Eric began his career in the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office in 1989 as a clerk, hired by former Prosecuting Attorney William F. Delhey.  Within a year, Eric was appointed as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney where he practiced in the 14th and 15th District Courts, handling civil infractions, misdemeanor cases, and felony preliminary examinations.  Eric also handled cases in the probate court, including mental health civil commitment hearings, juvenile delinquency hearings, and civil child protective proceedings.

In 1993 Eric was reappointed by newly elected Washtenaw County Prosecuting Attorney Brian L. Mackie.  Based on the quality of Eric’s performance, he advanced to circuit court and prosecuted felony cases such as armed robbery, home invasion, sexual assault and murder.  During this time,  Eric continued to prosecute a broad spectrum of cases, and also specialized in domestic violence and sexual assault, litigating cases in both the Circuit and District Courts.

Prosecutor Mackie promoted Eric to the position of First Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in 1998, assigning him to supervise the Sex Crimes Unit.  Under his leadership, the sex crimes unit experienced a very high rate of conviction.  While supervising the sex crimes unit, Eric maintained a regular caseload and conducted many trials.

Through his proven experience, Eric was entrusted with broader responsibilities, and in 2003, he was designated First Assistant of the felony division, managing the attorneys who handle district court preliminary examinations and circuit court trials.  In 2005, Eric was asked, again, to supervise the sex crimes unit in addition to maintaining his supervision of the felony division. Along with his supervisory duties, Eric continues to conduct trials of high importance.  NOTEWORTHY CASES

Eric's qualifications demonstrate that he is prepared to serve as an impartial judge on any matter that comes before the court, regardless of its complexity.  Eric has spent years balancing competing interests such as a defendant’s right to due process, a crime victim’s right to speedy justice, and the wise use of limited public resources.  As a supervising attorney, Eric has for years provided guidance and direction to other prosecutors about challenging factual, ethical and legal issues.

The Michigan Code of Professional Responsibility assigns to prosecutors the special duty  to act as a minister of justice and not simply as an advocate.  In this role, Eric has been steadfast in  advocating on behalf of victims and in protecting the rights of the accused. Eric’s proven experience has prepared him to make decisions and judgments that are informed, reasoned and fair to all those who appear before the court.
